Happy Birthday Mike Rotunda, Storied Champion in Wrestling – March 30th, 1958 – Today in Wrestling History

WWE IRS Mike Rotunda

Lawrence Michael Rotunda came into the world on March 30th, 1958 in St. Petersburg, Florida. You may not recognize his name right off the bat, maybe you know him as Mike Rotunda, Irwiin R. Schyster, Michael Wallstreet, etc (add a few more money related puns for a name). To me, he will always be one half of Money Inc. with “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.

Early wrestling career

Making his debut in professional wrestling in 1981 as “The Destroyer”, Rotunda would see action in Jim Crockett Promotions and Championship Wrestling from Florida among others. After a few years here Rotunda would catch the eye of the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) and get called up to form one half of “The U.S. Express” with Barry Windham.

The U.S. Express would see tag team gold in early 1985 and again in mid-1985. Later in 1985 The U.S. Express would break up as Windham left the WWF leaving Rotunda to perform by himself for about a year before he would too leave.

This separation of The U.S. Express would not last long as they would be reunited in American Wrestling Association (AWA).

Money comes into play

Skipping over a lot of this man’s career, I must leave you something to look for, we come back to the WWF. This was in the early 1990’s and “characters” still ruled the roost. Rotunda was repackaged as Irwin R. Schyster, I.R.S., and was a heel character.

In early 1992 Schyster would team up with Ted DiBiase forming Money Inc. This tag team would win the tag titles three times during their tenure. Cue the money puns and calling fans out for “being broke” and other tropes heels would use.

Rotunda’s career was mostly tag team related matches with various partners. While he did have a solid singles career, gold would mostly elude him without a tag team partner.

Now for the trivia

Since trivia is fun, Mike Rotunda has two sons with his wife Stephanie (herself the sister of Barry and Kendell Windham). What are the names of those sons and what do they do for a living?
