Happy Birthday Lance Storm – April 3rd, 1969 – Today in Wrestling History

Lance Storm WCW WWE ECW Wrestler Athlete

Lance Storm is one of those wrestlers that was technically sound in the ring. He was one fans could depend on for a great match against almost anyone. Born on April 3rd, 1969 in the city of Sarnia, Ontario, Storm entered professional wrestling in the early 1990’s. Trained at the Hart Brother Wrestling Camp located in Calgary, Alberta Canada, Storm would come up with Chris Jericho. Jericho is currently signed with All Elite Wrestling. You may recognize Storm for his pretty famous conversation starter – “If I could be serious for a minute…”

Formulative years for Lance Storm

Wrestling Association “R” out of Japan or in Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW) saw Storm perfect his athletic style. In SMW Storm and Jericho wrestled as the “Thrillseekers” tag team. Then Jericho suffered an injury that caused Storm to attempt a singles career where he would win singles gold.

In Canada Storm and Jericho were connected at the hip as they continued as a tag team. Back to Japan followed this short stint in Canada’s West Four Wrestling Alliance.

An unlikely pairing

When you think of Lance Storm you don’t really think of hardcore matches like what Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) was known for. In 1997, Storm would join ECW and wrestle many matches against the likes of Balls Mahoney, Rob Van Dam, Taz, and many others.

Storm would stay in the land of extreme for about three years before moving onto World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Storm was not exactly taken seriously as he would be placed in feuds with the likes of General Rection among other comedic acts of the time.

The Alliance invades WWF

Lance Storm was part of the initial “Invasion” angle that featured WCW Superstars invading WWF programming. On May 28th, 2001, Storm became the first WCW Superstar to “invade” a WWF program.

While the Invasion angle was not exactly handled as well as it could have been, it is what it is. Guys like Storm were only able to do so much within their limited options in this storyline.

Lance Storm still works in entertainment

Storm is currently a producer for WWE programming as well as author of a regular column for Fighting Spirit Magazine out of Britain. He is also a regular guest on Wrestling Observer Live, a radio show covering wrestling.
