National Wrestling Alliance Eddie Graham Memorial Show in Forida – May 9th, 1987 – Today in Wrestling History

This was the first Eddie Graham Memorial Show, of two such named events, to take place. The action went down in the Bayfront Arena in St. Petersgurg Florida on May 9th, 1987. There was a total of eight matches with three titles on the line.

The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is a conglomeration of companies that work together under a common banner. They did till Billie Corgan purchased the company and revamped its operations.

The first Eddie Graham Memorial Show was put on by Championship Wrestling from Florida. Connections with the NWA include Eddie Graham being president in the 70’s and CWF being a member promotion.

The match card was as follows:

The opening match was Bob Armstrong and Brad Armstrong taking on Basher and Spike

Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers saw war with Krusher Kruschev and Ron Bass

Jimmy Garvin battled Teijho Khan

Mike Graham fought Terry Funk

Barry Windham and Ed Gantner fought Dory Funk and The Tahitian Prince

The sixth match saw Mike Rotunda, NWA Florida Heavyweight Champion, accept a challenge from Kevin Sullivan

The lead into the main even was Animal and Hawk, NWA Tag Team Champions, seeing action against Manny Fernandez and Rick Rude

The main event saw two iconic athletes do battle. Dusty Rhodes fought the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair

An introduction

Born Edward Gossett on January 15th, 1930 in Chattanooga Tennessee, he would begin wrestling at 17. He was trained by Clarence “Cowboy” Luttrail in Texas. In the late 1950’s he would adopt the ring name “Eddie Graham”.

After travelling the United States Graham would find himself entering the NWA in Florida in 1960. He would wrestle for Championship Wrestling from Florida for almost 20 years before retiring. Graham served as the NWA President from 1976 to 1978.

Graham was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on March 29th, 2008. Dusty Rhodes inducted him with Mike Graham accepting on behalf of his father. Eddie Graham died on January 21st, 1985.
